One of Sacramento Kings’ most beloved figures parting ways with team

One of the most beloved figures in franchise history is leaving the Sacramento Kings.

Sources told The Sacramento Bee that Bobby Jackson is parting ways with the organization after one season as an assistant on Doug Christie’s coaching staff, confirming a report from KCRA’s Sean Cunningham. Sources said Jackson is still on staff but plans to leave at the end of the summer.

“Bobby will always be a Kings legend, and we are grateful for everything he has contributed to our organization,” the Kings said in a statement issued to The Bee. “We look forward to supporting him in his next chapter.”

Jackson, 53, played for the Kings twice during his 12-year career as an NBA player. He has served the organization in a variety of roles as a coach over the past 15 years, including his most recent stint as one of Christie’s top assistants.

Jackson first came to Sacramento when he signed with the Kings as a free agent in 2000. He spent five seasons with the Kings at the height of their success under former coach Rick Adelman, endearing himself to the city as a fan favorite.

Jackson teamed with the likes of Christie, Jason Williams, Mike Bibby, Peja Stojakovic, Chris Webber, Vlade Divac and Brad Miller. He was part of the 2001-02 team that won 61 games in the regular season before losing a heartbreaking and controversial seven-game series to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference finals.

Jackson was named NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2002-03 after averaging 15.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.2 steals. He rejoined the Kings for his final seasons in the NBA after being acquired in the trade that sent Ron Artest, now known as Metta World Peace, to the Houston Rockets.

Jackson started his coaching career as an assistant with the Kings from 2001-13. He returned as an assistant coach in 2019 and served as head coach of the G League Stockton Kings from 2021-23.

Jackson took a job as an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers from 2023-25 before returning to Sacramento once more last summer to oversee the team’s defense as a member of Christie’s staff.
