Kings notes: Gay, Collison sit out with injuries

After good health most of the season so far, injuries kept two Kings starters out Tuesday.

Forward Rudy Gay missed his first game of the season after the right Achilles’ tendinitis he’s played with lately became too much deal with when the Kings met the New Orleans Pelicans at Smoothie King Center.

Guard Darren Collison sat out his second game of the season with a left quadriceps contusion and muscle strain. He missed Sacramento’s loss Nov. 11 at Dallas with a shoulder injury.

The Kings have two more games on this trip, Wednesday in Houston and Friday at San Antonio.

Gay’s status for the rest of the trip is uncertain, but it sounds as if coach Michael Malone will hold the forward out for at least one more game.

“It’s been bothering him for a little bit now,” Malone said. “It’s gotten to the point where the best thing for him is to sit out and get some rest. But we’ll constantly get him treatment, re-evaluate and see where he’s at.”

Collison said he hurt his leg last week but was able to play until Tuesday. He was a late lineup scratch.

Like Gay, Collison will be re-evaluated Wednesday.

“It’s one of those things where you rest, wait and see,” Collison said.

Ramon Sessions started for Collison. Omri Casspi made his first start of the season in place of Gay.

Another call-up – The Kings recalled rookie forward Eric Moreland from the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League.

It was Moreland’s second stint with Bighorns. He had 10 points and six rebounds in a 154-143 loss to Bakersfield last Friday.

Moreland will join the Kings Wednesday in Houston, which is convenient with Thanksgiving the next day. Moreland is from Houston and will have a chance to see his family before rejoining the Bighorns at some point.

Rare ejection – It had been more than a decade since a Kings coach had been kicked out of a game with two technical fouls before Tuesday.

Malone was ejected after being assessed two technical fouls by referee Eric Lewis with 4:42 left in the first half. It was the first time that’s happened to a Kings coach since Feb. 16, 2003, when Rick Adelman picked up two technical fouls and was tossed from a game against San Antonio.
