Why fans of 49ers, Rams will see lots of black, yellow when teams meet Thursday

The 49ers debuted their black alternate uniforms on Sept. 14, 2015, in Santa Clara. They’ll wear these uniforms Thursday against the Los Angeles Rams as part of the NFL’s Color Rush.

When the 49ers play this week on “Thursday Night Football,” they’ll have a different look than usual.

They will wear black uniforms with red trim for NFL Color Rush when they host the Los Angeles Rams in an NFC West showdown. The visitors will don all-yellow gear.

The 49ers first wore the black uniforms in their 2015 season debut, a 20-3 home victory over the Minnesota Vikings, but they were released as an alternate look. Last season, they ditched the red socks for black ones and called them Color Rush uniforms, which the team wore during a 33-21 loss to the visiting Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 6.

The Rams last wore their yellow outfit on Dec. 17, 2015, during the team’s last home game in St. Louis, beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-23. They moved to Los Angeles following that season. Last season, the Rams wore white Color Rush uniforms.

The NFL Color Rush is primarily done during “Thursday Night Football” telecasts. The teams wear uniforms in which the jersey, pants and socks are the same color. This season, the Raiders will get their chance to don their all-white outfits on Oct. 19, when they host the Kansas City Chiefs, who will sport all red.
