‘Together we are America.’ Bad Bunny halftime spotlights Latino influence

“The only thing more powerful than hate is love” was emblazoned on a digital billboard behind Bad Bunny as he stepped off the stage at the conclusion of his Super Bowl LX halftime show performance.

The whole show was a celebration of Latin influence on American life from fruterias to celebrities and from construction workers to artists.

Bad Bunny kicked off the show with “Tití Me Preguntó” — which earned TIME Magazine’s best song of 2022. He followed up it up with his remix of the 2004 Daddy Yankee hit “Gasolina,” called “EoO.”

As the theatrical stage performance with dozens of dancers and several sets moved through Bad Bunny’s setlist, celebrity cameos were also highlighted, including Jessica Alba, Pedro Pascal, influencer Alix Earle and Cardi B.

Bad Bunny’s performance welcomed two features. Lady Gaga performed a salsa-version of her 2024 song “Die With a Smile.” And Ricky Martin performed Bad Bunny’s “LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii.”

Right before the conclusion of the show, Bad Bunny performed his 2022 song “El Apagón.” The song is a celebration of Puerto Rico and an acknowledgement of the U.S. territory’s struggle for resources. The title translates to “power outage.”

During the song, the reggaeton artist scaled sparking power lines and waved the Puerto Rican flag.

As he exited the stage, he held a football in his hands with the words “Together we are America” written across it as singers and dancers shouted the names of every country in North and South America.

NBC published the full set list:

Social media reaction

Users across social media platforms reacted to the show. @leaanna_ on X said “The most wholesome amazing wonderful incredible Super Bowl half time performance. amazing Bad Bunny well done.”

President Donald Trump took to TruthSocial to share his displeasure with the performance, saying “nobody understands a word this guy is saying.”

“The Super Bowl Halftime Show is absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER! It makes no sense, is an affront to the Greatness of America, and doesn’t represent our standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence,” Trump said in his post.

The Puerto Rican reggaeton artist was announced as the headliner for the Super Bowl LX Halftime show following his historic Puerto Rico residency that drew more than a half million fans for his new album “DeBi TiRAR MaS FOToS.”

Bad Bunny launched his international “Debí tirar más fotos World Tour” late last year. However, he has been vocal about his refusal to perform in the U.S. due to concerns about ICE agents targeting fans who attended his shows, according to CNN.

Following the NFL halftime announcement in October, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, said that she would send agents to the arena where Bad Bunny is set to perform, according to Them, a news site focused on LGBTQ+ stories and issues.

The alternate halftime show

Turning Point USA, a conservative organization founded by the late Charlie Kirk, announced it would host its own halftime show called the “All American Halftime Show” giving attendees the option to vote on the genre that included country, worship music and “anything in English.”

At the Turning Point USA halftime show, promoted as an all-American alternative to the Super Bowl show, Brantley Gilbert, Gabby Barrett, Lee Brice and Kid Rock avoided politics and stuck to singing their respective hit songs. The show, which concluded with a brief video tribute to Kirk, overlapped with the resumption of play at the Super Bowl.
