49ers notes: Team loses another ‘Harbaugh guy’; Baalke checks out CB
The 49ers said goodbye to another "Harbaugh guy" on Thursday.
A week after releasing offensive tackle and former Jim Harbaugh recruit, Jonathan Martin, who was quickly signed by the Panthers, free-agent quarterback Josh Johnson signed with the Bengals. Johnson was Harbaugh's quarterback at the University of San Diego and he spent the 2012 and 2014 seasons as a backup with the 49ers.
He also is familiar to Cincinnati having spent the 2013 season there. He will compete with A.J. McCarron for the backup position behind Andy Dalton. Whether the 49ers earn a compensatory pick in 2016 from the acquisition will depend on whether Johnson makes the team and his role during the season.
The 49ers have only two quarterbacks on the roster as their offseason program is set to begin next week (see: below). They likely will head into training camp with four throwers. Josh Freeman seemed liked a good possibility given his relationship with 49ers quarterbacks coach Steve Logan. Freeman, however, signed with the Dolphins this week.

If you are creating a mock draft -- and, oh how I hope you are; the world needs a few more of those -- a smart pick might be Washington cornerback Marcus Peters. Not only is Peters, considered by many the top corner in the draft, scheduled to visit the 49ers this month, general manager Trent Baalke was on hand for Washington's pro day on Thursday.
Last year, Baalke attended Wisconsin's pro day, and the 49ers drafted Chris Borland in the third round. In 2011, he and Harbaugh were at Missouri's pro day a month before they made Aldon Smith a first-round pick.

Because the 49ers have a new head coach, they are allotted an extra minicamp this offseason. That voluntary cap will take place right before the draft, April 28-30.
First Day of offseason program: April 7
OTAs: May 19-21, May 27-29, June 1-2, June 4-5
Mandatory Minicamp: June 9-11
