49ers go cornerback with their last pick, taking Tim Harris from Virginia
The 49ers used the 198th pick in the draft to address arguably their most pressing remaining need, tapping Virginia cornerback Tim Harris to compete for a roster spot at training camp.
Harris (6-foot-2, 197 pounds) has the height and length typical of the team’s other cornerbacks. He posted a 4.45 in the 40-yard dash, 39-inch vertical jump and 6.9-second three-cone drill at his pro day. He wasn’t invited to the annual scouting combine.
Harris, who turns 24 in July, received medical red-shirt seasons in 2016 and 2017 while dealing with a torn labrum and wrist injury, respectively. He appeared in 47 games after arriving at Virginia in 2013. He started 25 contests and broke up 22 passes with four interceptions. Harris allowed a 54.7 percent completion rate when targeted, according to Pro Football Focus.
The 49ers should have a strong competition at cornerback opposite Richard Sherman. Ahkello Witherspoon and Tarvarius Moore, recent third-round draft picks, will presumably compete with veteran Jason Verrett for a starting job.
San Francisco has no more picks left in this draft, unless they make a trade.
