49ers tight end Garrett Celek is done for the season with a back injury
Garrett Celek on Thursday became the third San Francisco 49ers player this week to land on injured reserve.
The veteran tight end had been dealing with a back injury that caused him to start the season on the physically unable to perform list (PUP) following back surgery in the spring to repair a fractured disk.
Celek, 31, and left tackle Joe Staley are the only remaining members of the team that were on the roster the last time the 49ers made the playoffs following the 2013 season. But Celek won’t be on the field when the team makes its return trip next month.
The news comes a day after center Weston Richburg was officially placed on IR Wednesday due to a torn patellar tendon in his right knee sustained over the weekend in New Orleans. Receiver Marquise Goodwin’s season officially ended Tuesday when he was placed on the injured list with toe and knee issues.
Practice squad player Daniel Helm, an undrafted rookie from Duke, will take Celek’s place on the active roster. Levine Toilolo, who’s been inactive since Celek’s return, is likely to get bumped up to the 46-man gameday roster to take over as the primary blocking tight end.
