49ers hope to have running back Tevin Coleman back from injury for Super Bowl
The 49ers hope to have running back Tevin Coleman available for the Super Bowl after he dislocated his right shoulder during the NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers.
Coleman was carted off the field in the second quarter Sunday a week following his 105-yard, two-touchdown performance in the divisional round victory over the Minnesota Vikings.
Coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the media Monday before the results from Coleman’s MRI were available but remained optimistic about his chances at playing in the game just under two weeks away.
“We got to wait until we get the stuff back so I don’t want to speculate too much, but usually a week to rest and usually gets back in, I expect him to have a chance to play,” Shanahan said.
“(You) can’t hold me to that. We’ll find out more after the imaging but I expect him to have a good chance to play.”
Coleman had six carries for 21 yards before leaving. His injury led to an increased role for running back Raheem Mostert, who had 220 yards and four touchdowns in the game. Mostert’s second touchdown came the snap after Coleman left when he fell forward awkwardly on a 4-yard run to the Packers’ 9-yard line.
Coleman on the season averaged 4.0 yards per carry and scored six rushing touchdowns during the regular season, the second most on the team behind Mostert’s eight.
If Coleman can’t play against the Kansas City Chiefs, second-year pro Jeff Wilson Jr. would likely be made active for the first time since the Falcons loss Dec. 15.
Wilson in 10 games had just 105 yards on 27 carries this season, including four rushing touchdowns and the game-winning receiving score during the Nov. 17 comeback win over the Arizona Cardinals.
Shanahan is expected to address reporters again Wednesday as the 49ers have a normal week of practice before flying to Miami on Sunday for the start of Super Bowl week.
