49ers trade Matt Breida to Dolphins, draft offensive lineman with fifth-round pick
In their fourth trade since the start of the NFL draft, the 49ers on Saturday swapped running back Matt Breida to the Miami Dolphins for a fifth-round pick coming at No. 153 overall. San Francisco used it to take West Virginia offensive lineman Colton McKivitz.
McKivitz (6-6, 306) is the second offensive lineman the team acquired Saturday after trading for Washington Pro Bowler Trent Williams to replace Joe Staley, who is expected to retire.
McKivitz, 23, was a four-year starter for the Mountaineers primarily working at right tackle but could be moved to guard in the NFL. The 49ers have an opening in the starting lineup at right guard after cutting veteran Mike Person last month. He was a second-team All American in 2019 and the Big 12 co-offensive lineman of the year.
Daniel Brunskill, Ben Garland and free-agent addition Tom Compton are all expected to compete to replace Person. McKivitz could also be thrown into that mix.
Breida, meanwhile, fell out of the running back rotation late last season behind Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman. Breida was active for the Super Bowl but didn’t play an offensive snap. Jeff Wilson Jr. is also under contract.
The 49ers re-worked the contract of Jerick McKinnon to return in 2020 after missing the last two seasons due to complications from an ACL tear sustained before the start of 2018.
Breida, a former undrafted free agent from Georgia Southern, rushed for 1,902 yards on 381 carries (5.0 average) and scored 10 total touchdowns in three seasons with San Francisco.
