49ers draft blocking tight end Charlie Woerner in Round 6
The 49ers found a blocking tight end late in the 2020 NFL Draft to replace departed free agent Levine Toilolo and recent retiree Garrett Celek.
With the sixth-round pick acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in the trade for receiver Marquise Goodwin, San Francisco drafted Georgia tight end Charlie Woerner to add a blocking presence to the position group with selection No. 190 overall. The Goodwin trade allowed the 49ers to move up 20 spots in the round to tap Woerner.
Woerner, 22, appeared in 54 games (19 starts) over four seasons for the Bulldogs and finished with a modest total of 34 catches for 376 yards and one touchdown. But he was described by Pro Football Focus as “one of the best and most devastating run blockers in the draft class.”
With very few openings projected on the 53-man roster, Woerner has a shot to make the team for his versatility as a blocker. He could serve as a backup to fullback Kyle Juszczyk and an H-back in Kyle Shanahan’s complex offense.
Woerner joins a tight end group headlined by All-Pro George Kittle that includes a pair of former undrafted free agents Ross Dwelley and Daniel Helm.
