Report: 49ers player working out with teammates tests positive for coronavirus
An unknown 49ers player working out with the teammates in Nashville, Tennessee, tested positive for the coronavirus this week, according to a report from NFL Network.
The known players participating in throwing sessions at Brentwood Academy include quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Mullens, C.J. Beathard and Broc Rutter, tight end George Kittle, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, receivers Kendrick Bourne, Deebo Samuel, Dante Pettis, Brandon Aiyuk, Jalen Hurd, Trent Taylor, Jauan Jennings, Shawn Poindexter and Chris Finke.
“Federal and state privacy laws prohibit our organization from commenting on the personal health of our employees,” a team spokesman said Friday.
The news comes a day after Samuel had surgery to repair a Jones fracture in his left foot leaving his start of the season in doubt. He’s expected to be out until September with the season opener against the Cardinals scheduled for Sept. 13. News also came out Friday about fellow wideout Richie James Jr., the team’s top return man, who broke his right wrist and is facing a two-month absence, according to NFL Network.
It’s believed players participating in the Nashville workouts would be tested and there would be contact tracing to limit spreading. Kittle, Taylor and Beathard live in the area and are expected to isolate themselves. Many others traveled to Nashville from the Bay Area this week.
Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott, Broncos safety Kareem Jackson and an assistant on the Buccaneers coaching staff have reportedly tested positive this week as the number of cases around the country have spiked as stay-at-home restrictions have been eased.
The 49ers are scheduled to begin training camp July 28.
