Here’s what we know about 49ers training camp schedule
Head coach Kyle Shanahan is still trying to finalize the 49ers’ practice schedule now that players are trickling into the team’s Santa Clara facility and taking tests for the coronavirus.
The 49ers are expected to begin on-field practice work after at least a week of strength and conditioning, a process that would happen in April during a normal offseason. But nothing is normal these days.
Getting that ramp-up period, and the cancellation of all four preseason games, was a sticking point for the NFL Players Association when they negotiated the protocols for this unique season.
Here’s what we know about the 49ers’ upcoming schedule for August ahead of the Sept. 13 season opener against the Arizona Cardinals (which is subject to change, of course).
Quarterbacks, rookies and injured players are already in the building having taken their two COVID-19 tests last Thursday and Sunday ahead of their physicals earlier this week.
Receiver Richie James Jr. is the only player on the reserve/COVID-19 list which was created for players who either test positive or has been in close contact with someone known to have the virus. James fractured a bone in his forearm earlier this offseason and was expected to miss practice time anyway.
All other players began taking their first virus screenings Tuesday and should have their rounds of testing done by the weekend, when many will also take their physicals and get fitted for their equipment. All players are required to attend virtual COVID-19 training program during this time.
The first full-team meeting is scheduled for Monday, which begins the strength and conditioning program — which will include meetings in the team’s reconfigured headquarters to comply with health and safety protocols. That’s also when daily testing will begin for all players and coaches, which will last at least two weeks, depending on the number of positive cases.
According to a league memo, Aug. 3 through 11 is an acclimation period that includes one hour of weight room work and one hour of conditioning with the strength staff only. Coaches are allowed to run walkthroughs during this time.
A gradual “ramp-up” period is Aug. 12 through 16. There’s a maximum of 3 1/2 hours of field time each day (which includes walkthroughs). Helmets and shells are permitted during the first two days. Non-padded practices can begin August 14, with an off day the 15th.
The first padded practices can begin Aug. 17 through Sept. 6. Then, teams will begin preparing for Week 1 on Sept. 13, with the exception of the Chiefs and Texans who are slated to play in a Thursday night three games earlier.
