San Francisco 49ers

Here is what 49ers fans had to say prior to their loss against the Arizona Cardinals

It was sunny and warm in Santa Clara on Sunday, a stark contrast to the last time the San Francisco 49ers played in Levi’s Stadium. On Oct. 24 against the Indianapolis Colts, the elements made for a miserable setting, with sideways wind and rain. It was enough to make a fan not want to come back. Unfortunately, many did return Sunday to watch the 49ers get pummeled by the Arizona Cardinals, 31-17.

Fans were at least optimistic that the team could turn it around.

“It’s been awhile (since we have won at home),” 49ers season ticket holder Rich Diaz said. “Hopefully we can get healthy.”

Diaz, a South Bay resident, drove a decked-out hearse car painted 49ers red and black. He bought the car on eBay one night for $2,000 and made it a project to repaint and restore it. One of the key features is a skeleton on the front hood with a Cardinals jersey on it. Diaz says he owns a jersey of every team and swaps it out for whoever the 49ers are playing that week.

Albert Vann also caught tailgaters’ attention with his custom gold chair. The chair has horns and can shoot confetti. Vann said he worked on building the driveable chair for the last year and Sunday was the first time he’s brought it to Levi’s Stadium.

Vann has been a 49ers fan since childhood. His dad, Jess, was a diehard Cowboys fan, but he picked the 49ers because they were the local team.

“My dad was a Cowboys fan, but I’ve always been a 49ers fan,” Vann said. “My dad taught me how to become a fan (of any team).”

Speaking of fandom since birth, that applies to Bay Area resident Aaron Magdangal. He took his young family to their first 49ers game of the season. He tailgated with friends who flew in from Arizona that happened to be Cardinals fans. His spirits were high while making breakfast for his kids while tailgating.

Aaron’s dad, Mario, was a 49ers season ticket holder who got him into rooting for the team in red and gold. He hopes his fandom rubs off on his kids.

“It’s very cool,” Magdangal said. “I’ve been a fan ever since I was born. It’s very cool (to come to Levi’s Stadium).”

Lamar Jourdan was at the game with his brother, David, who is a New York Giants fan. They were watching the Las Vegas Raiders-Giants game on a TV with a food spread while waiting for the 49ers game to start.

“I’m a diehard 49er (fan),” Jourdan said. “I love (this) team.”

Jourdan sported the red-and-black jersey of Nick Bosa, his favorite player. He grew up in Oakland but decided to become a 49ers fan because of players like Roger Craig.

“I grew up in Oakland and even though I’m a 49ers fan, I don’t mind the Raiders,” Jourdan said while watching the Raiders-Giants game. “I (became a 49ers) fan because of guys like Roger Craig.”

The 49ers entered this week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals seeking their first home victory since Oct. 18, 2020. 49er fans will have to wait at least another week for their team to get a win at Levi’s Stadium. In the meantime, fans can debate on many topics such as who should start at quarterback the rest of the season.

“I think it should be Jimmy (Garoppolo),” Diaz said about who should start at quarterback. “I’m all about the veterans. Experience over athleticism.”
