49ers pregame: Vernon Davis will play; Anthony Davis will not

Tight end Vernon Davis is in uniform and will start tonight’s game against the Rams, his first action since injuring his back early in a Sept. 28 win against the Eagles.

Davis was the 49ers’ second-leading pass catcher with 850 receiving yards last season, and he led the team with 13 touchdown catches. He got off to a fast start with two touchdowns in Week 1 this year but suffered a foot injury in Week 2 and missed the following week’s game against Arizona. When he returned seven days later, he injured his back.

Vance McDonald filled in for Davis last week and played every offensive snap. Another tight end, Derek Carrier, played 29 (41 percent) snaps, and it will be interesting to see which back-up tight end receives more snaps today with Davis in the lineup.

Meanwhile, Perrish Cox will start at one of the cornerback spots for Tramaine Brock (toe), who was declared out for the game. Jonathan Martin will start at right tackle for Anthony Davis, who is coming back from knee and ankle injuries suffered against the Eagles.

With veteran special teamers Ray Ventrone and Kassim Osgood in uniform, the 49ers deactivated rookie gunner L.J. McCray, who hasn’t had the impact the team was hoping for when they kept him on the roster over some veteran players. It’s likely that Osgood and rookie Jimmie Ward will play gunner today.
