The San Francisco 49ers football team is headed to the Super Bowl for the eighth time in about four decades.

On Sunday, the Bay Area team will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.

They’ll go head to head at Allegiant Stadium near Las Vegas.

Sunday’s game will mark the first time the two teams have clashed in a championship game since 2020, when the Chiefs defeated the 49ers at Super Bowl LIV.

San Francisco already holds five Super Bowl titles, making it one of six franchises to win least four Super Bowls. The Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Green Bay Packers also fall into that category.

The San Francisco 49ers made their first Super Bowl appearance in 1982, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan.

Super Bowl XIX, 1985

Who did the 49ers play: Miami Dolphins

Did the 49ers win: Yes

The 49ers triumphed over the Miami Dolphins 38-16 at Super Bowl XIX at Stanford Stadium in Stanford. This was the second championship win for the Bay Area team, and its first on California soil.

Super Bowl XXIII, 1989

Who did the 49ers play: Cincinnati Bengals

Did the 49ers win: Yes

The Niners went head-to-head with the Bengals again in Super Bowl XXIII at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami and came home with a third championship title. The final score was 20-16.

Super Bowl XXIV, 1990

Who did the 49ers play: Denver Broncos

Did the 49ers win: Yes

San Francisco defeated the Denver Broncos 55-10 at Super Bowl XXIV at the Louisiana Super Dome in New Orleans, earning its fourth championship title.

Super Bowl XXIX, 1995

Super Bowl XXIX found the 49ers facing off against the San Diego Chargers, which have since relocated to Los Angeles, in Miami. The Bay Area team beat the Chargers 49-26 to win a fifth championship title.

The 49ers returned to New Orleans to battle the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII The Ravens won 34-31 to clinch their second championship title.

San Francisco played the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The Chiefs triumphed with a final score of 31-20, earning their third Super Bowl win.
