49ers injury updates: All the question marks heading into Eagles playoff game
The San Francisco are listing all their injured players as questionable for Sunday’s Wild Card playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Tackle Trent Williams (hamstring), receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee, ankle), cornerback Renardo Green (foot), defensive end Keion White (groin), linebacker Luke Gifford (quad), linebacker Dee Winters (ankle) and receiver Jacob Cowing (hamstring) were all listed as questionable, coach Kyle Shanahan announced Friday.
“We’re going to Round 1 of the playoffs, playing as good of football as we can, being as prepared as we can and cutting it loose for three and a half hours,” a terse Shanahan said when asked about the mood of the team while dealing with the injuries.
Some of those injuries loom large for the 49ers, who hit the road to play the Eagles, 1:25 p.m. Pacific in Philadelphia. The 49ers had a chance at the No. 1 seed, which would’ve given them a first-round bye and an extra week to heal up, had they been able to defeat the Seattle Seahawks last Saturday at Levi’s Stadium.
Instead, the 49ers played their worst offensive game of the season and dropped to the No. 6 seed in the NFC playoffs.
Trent Williams
Williams practiced Thursday and Friday after straining his hamstring on the first offensive snap of the Week 17 win over the Chicago Bears, as he tried to chase down Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards during his pick-six.
Williams missed the finale against the Seahawks but was listed as a limited participant during the final two sessions of the week.
Ricky Pearsall
Pearsall, who missed six games in the middle of the season with a knee injury, didn’t practice this week after missing the season finale against Seattle while being listed with knee and ankle injuries. He missed two of the last three games, and appeared to aggravate the injury against the Bears during his five-catch, 85-yard performance. The 2024 first-round draft pick was among the league leaders in yards per catch (16.4) during his four games before the initial knee injury.
Shanahan said Pearsall still has a chance to play Sunday despite not practicing at all this week.
Renardo Green, Dee Winters and others
Green, who missed Weeks 16 and 17 with a neck injury, landed on the injury report with a foot issue that came up during Friday’s practice.
“He zinged something today,” Shanahan said.
If Green can’t go, Darrell Luter Jr. would likely be the top option to replace him.
White has appeared in all nine games since the 49ers acquired him in a trade with the New England Patriots in late October. He’s played 57% of the snaps while replacing Nick Bosa and first-round draft pick Mykel Williams on the edges of the 49ers’ defensive line.
If Winters can’t play, the 49ers could be forced to rely on players they added late in the season. Veteran Eric Kendricks, who signed Dec. 22, could play “Mike” linebacker next to Garrett Wallow, who was added Dec. 8.
Kyzir White could also be in the mix after signing to the practice squad on Wednesday. He could be elevated to the active roster in time for Sunday’s game.
