The 49ers pared their roster to 75 players Monday by waiving 10 and placing four, including center Daniel Kilgore, on injury lists. One of the players released was former British discus thrower Lawrence Okoye, a defensive end.
Kilgore started the first seven games last year at center and was playing well when he suffered a broken lower fibula against Denver. He had a follow-up procedure in June.
Jim Tomsula on Sunday said a recent checkup on the leg was positive. But Kilgore remains in a protective walking boot and will begin the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list.
That means he will not take up a roster spot initially but must miss the first six games. The earliest he can play is the 49ers' Oct. 22 home game against the Seahawks.

The 49ers have shuffled the center-right guard combination throughout the summer.
Joe Looney started at center and Marcus Martin at right guard for the first two exhibition games. On Saturday, Martin moved to center, and sixth-round pick Ian Silberman moved to guard.
The team also placed fourth-round draft pick DeAndre Smelter, a wide receiver, on the non-football injury list. Smelter tore his ACL on Nov. 29 while playing for Georgia Tech. He, too, is ineligible to play until after Week 6. The team also placed rookie wide receiver Dres Anderson (knee) and linebacker Desmond Bishop (thumb) on injured reserve.
Okoye, meanwhile, was perhaps the strongest player on the team. But the one-time Olympic discus thrower had never even put on a football helmet until 2013. And he was not able to translate his power into a consistent pass rush and found himself near the bottom of a deep group of defensive linemen. Okoye played only three snaps in Saturday’s loss to the Broncos.
Among the others waived were rookie kicker Corey Acosta, who made all four of his field-goal attempts in the preseason, and fullback Trey Millard, a seventh-round pick last season.
The team waived:
K Corey Acosta,
LB Steve Beauharnais
CB Mylan Hicks
T Sean Hooey
WR Mario Hull
WR Chuck Jacobs
WR Nigel King
OLB Shawn Lemon
FB Trey Millard
DE Lawrence Okoye
All of the players who were waived are eligible for the 49ers' 10-man practice squad, which can be formed on Sunday. The 49ers and every other team must reduce their rosters to 53 players by Saturday at 1 p.m.
