49ers pregame: Anthony Davis back at right tackle; Looney benched
Right tackle Anthony Davis will be in uniform for the first time since the Nov. 16 concussion he suffered against the Giants. Davis, who sustained the injury when his head hit the ground at the end of the Giants game, had been experiencing symptoms as recently as last week.
After starting every game since his rookie season in 2010, Davis dealt with a slew of issues this year beginning with a shoulder problem that required offseason surgery. He’s also suffered a hamstring strain, knee injury, ankle sprain and the concussion. Jonathan Martin has started nine games this season in Davis’ absence.
Meanwhile, Tony Jerod-Eddie will start for recently released Ray McDonald at left defensive end. Either Aaron Lynch or Dan Skuta will start in place of Ahmad Brooks at left outside linebacker. Brooks is dealing with a thumb injury.
Joe Looney, who started at center last week and got an eyebrow-raising rotten review from offensive coordinator Greg Roman on Thursday, is inactive for today’s game. So is backup guard Andrew Tiller. Rookie Marcus Martin will start the game at center.
Nick Moody will start at inside linebacker for Chris Borland, who was placed on injured reserve today with an ankle sprain.
