Jim Tomsula’s 49ers staff starting to take shape
Jim Tomsula is in the midst of filling out his 49ers staff. Here’s what things look like so far:
OFFENSE
Coordinator: Vacant. The team likely will look at Colts assistant Rob Chudzinski. Mike Shanahan also has been linked to the position.
Quarterbacks: Vacant: The 49ers retained their previous quarterbacks coach, Geep Chryst, but his role has yet to be defined. Chryst has worked as a tight ends coach in the past.
Offensive line: Chris Foerster. The NFL Network reported he is in line to join the 49ers. He was with the team in 2008-09 and is familiar to left tackle Joe Staley and to running back Frank Gore. Foerster spent the last five years in Washington which used a lot of stretch-running techniques. His head coach for the majority of that time: Mike Shanahan.
Running backs: Tom Rathman. He’s been with the 49ers since 2009 and has worked with Foerster in the past.
Wide receivers: Vacant. John Morton has not been retained and could join former 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman in Buffalo.
Tight ends: Vacant: Eric Mangini has not been retained. Chryst could fill this role.
Ass’t offensive line: Eric Wolford. According to Football Scoop, the former Youngstown State head coach will join the 49ers in this capacity.
Others: The 49ers have retained assistants Mick Lombardi and Ronald Curry. CSN Bay Area reported that the Bills want to interview Curry for a position on their staff.
DEFENSE
Coordinator: Vacant. The 49ers interviewed ex-Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver, presumably for this position, on Friday.
Defensive line: Vacant
Outside linebackers: Vacant
Inside linebackers: Vacant
Secondary: Vacant
Assistant secondary: Vacant
Others: The team wants to retain assistant defensive coach Ejiro Evero. He played safety at UC Davis and would seem to be a good fit as a secondary coach.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Coordinator: Vacant
Ass’t special teams: Vacant
