One-time Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver will join Jim Tomsula's 49ers staff as a senior assistant/linebackers coach, a league source confirmed today.
Tarver was a long-time assistant in San Francisco where he overlapped with Tomsula for four seasons. Tarver, 40, began his NFL coaching career as an offensive assistant under Steve Mariucci in 2001. In 2004 he was an assistant running backs coach and the next year he began working with outside linebackers.
He left to become Stanford's defensive coordinator in 2011, and the following year he was hired as the Raiders defensive coordinator.
Two of the 49ers current linebackers, Patrick Willis and Ahmad Brooks, have worked with Tarver in the past.

The 49ers have yet to announce any new hire. Their three coordinator positions are currently unfilled, although the team is closing in on a deal with special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey, another past associate of Tomsula.
Eric Mangini is a possibility to become the team's defensive coordinator. Rob Chudzinski, Lane Kiffin and Mike Shanahan are names that have been connected to the offensive coordinator opening.
