Jarrett Parker’s grand slam lifts the River Cats to 18th-inning 6-5 victory
Jarrett Parker hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 18th inning Saturday to power the Sacramento River Cats past the Salt Lake Bees in a game that lasted 5 hours, 22 minutes at Raley Field.
Brett Bochy was credited with the win, despite giving up a solo home run in the top of the 18th to Carlos Perez to break the stalemate. The Bees piled on with a two-RBI double by Alfredo Marte.
But the River Cats (2-1) answered back when Parker’s blast brought in Carlos Triunfel (double), Guillermo Quiroz (walk) and Adam Duvall (walk).
Salt Lake’s Josh Rutledge set the stage for extra innings in the seventh on a sacrifice fly that scored Kyle Kubitza, who led off the inning with a double, to make it 2-2.
Right after the play, catcher Andrew Susac was hurt on a foul ball. A scout who was at the game told Comcast SportsNet that a foul tip hit his right hand and made a very loud impact. The River Cats said on their website early Sunday that “Susac appeared to be in pain and left the game immediately.”
The 25-year-old spent last season a backup catcher for the Giants, winning a World Series ring in a ride he last week said was “a dream come true.” An x-ray is planned on the Jesuit High graduate’s throwing hand, according to CSN.
Before the wild ending, the teams’ bullpens combined for more than 10 scoreless innings and 31 strikeouts among 14 different relievers. Starter Ty Blach made his Triple-A debut for the River Cats, going seven innings with two runs and six strikeouts. Nick Tropeano, pitched six innings in his start for the Bees (1-2), striking out seven while allowing two runs.
The game was also the first in a River Cats uniform for Travis Ishikawa. The first baseman was 0-3 with a strikeout to start his rehab assignment (back soreness).
According to the River Cats’ website, the game ties the franchise record for the longest by innings – the other being a 2-1 loss to Tacoma on July 18 (and 19), 2012, that lasted 5 hours and 32 minutes.
The teams wrap up their season-opening series at 1:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Raley Field.
