River Cats fall behind early, can’t catch up to Bees
The River Cats found out the hard way that a struggling team can be dangerous.
Sacramento fell 9-5 to the host Salt Lake Bees on Monday at Smith’s Ballpark. The Bees, who entered the game a Pacific Coast League-worst 1-10, broke out against River Cats starter Braulio Lara, tagging the left-hander for nine earned runs and 11 hits in 32/3 innings. The loss dropped Lara to 0-2 and ballooned his season ERA to 8.78.
Salt Lake got to Lara early and often, scoring in each of the first four innings, including five runs in the fourth to chase him from the game.
The River Cats didn’t go quietly, finishing with 14 hits – just two fewer than the Bees – with six doubles. Every Sacramento starter had at least one hit, and four players had multihit games. Catcher Guillermo Quiroz led the way, going 3 for 5 with two doubles.
