Mark Appel threw 62/3 innings of shutout ball, striking out four, as the Fresno Grizzlies topped the River Cats 4-1 Wednesday night at Raley Field.
Chris Stratton took the loss for the River Cats, giving up four earned runs on seven hits in five innings. He struck out five.
Xavier Avery and Kelby Tomlinson led the Cats at the plate. Avery had two hits to lift his batting average to .364. Tomlinson broke the shutout with two outs in the ninth inning, singling Avery home from second.
Domingo Santana, Tyler White and Andrew Aplin each had two hits and an RBI for Fresno.
