River Cats hang on to beat El Paso

The River Cats lost a no-hit bid in the eighth inning and nearly blew a five-run lead in a 5-4 win over the El Paso Chihuahuas on Monday night at Raley Field.

River Cats starter Nik Turley had a perfect game through five innings, striking out eight. He walked two in the sixth and was removed after 99 pitches. Clay Rapada threw a hitless seventh.

El Paso broke through for three hits and four unearned runs in the eighth against Steven Okert and Erik Cordier. Tim Federowicz ended the no-hit bid with a leadoff single. The rally included a fielding error by third baseman Kevin Frandsen, a passed ball by Trevor Brown and two walks.

Cordier earned the save after allowing a single and a walk with two outs in the ninth.

The River Cats scored four runs in the third, highlighted by Kelby Tomlinson’s two-run single, Adam Duvall’s sacrifice fly and Jarrett Parker’s RBI single. Parker added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
