Republic FC loses tough one on road

Steven Evans scored in the 87th minute to lead the Portland Timbers 2 to a 2-1 win over Republic FC in Portland, Ore., according to the Republic FC website.

Republic FC (1-2-0) cleared a shot by Portland, but the ball went right to Evans at the top of the box, who put the ball in the top right corner of the net.

Cameron Iwasa scored the game’s first goal in the 61st minute for Republic FC off a pass from Joaquin Rivas. Portland (2-0-0) scored a minute later, however, when Kharlton Belmar poked the ball past Sacramento goalie Patrick McLain.

▪ Cal’s Missy Franklin won the Honda Sports Award as the nation’s top woman in college swimming. The sophomore from Centennial, Colorado, helped Cal win the NCAA title and set an American record in the 200-yard freestyle and also captured the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard backstroke.

▪ Seattle (13-15, 6-1 Western Athletic Conference) scored a run on a throwing error in the 11th inning to beat Sacramento State (17-11, 6-1) 3-2 in Bellevue, Wash., according to the Hornets’ website.
