Former Republic FC goalkeeper Patrick McLain signs with Chicago Fire of MLS

Former Republic FC goalkeeper Patrick McLain has returned to Major League Soccer, signing a contract Monday with the Chicago Fire.

In 29 matches for Sacramento last season, McLain had 88 saves and allowed 37 goals. In USL play, McLain had six shutouts in 24 matches and a 1.25 goals-against average.

“We believe that Patrick, perhaps not yet recognized by many, is about to become known as an outstanding talent,” Chicago Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez said in a statement released by the team. “He’s excellent with his feet, and he also commands his box very well.”

After playing at Cal Poly, McLain spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with Chivas USA, a defunct MLS franchise. He played for the USL Orange County Blues FC in 2014 before joining Republic FC last season.
