Sacramento Gold hosts U.S. Open Cup match

The Sacramento Gold will host the Burlingame Dragons at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Capital Christian High School in the opening round of the 103rd U.S. Open Cup.

The Gold is a fourth-division men’s soccer team that competes in the National Premier Soccer League and is comprised of many players with area high school or college soccer ties. Among the Gold’s key players is 2015 Major League Soccer SuperDraft selection Chimdum Mez, a forward from Sacramento State and Franklin High School who wasn’t signed by the San Jose Earthquakes.

Republic FC goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek and forward Max Alvarez are Sacramento Gold alumni.

The Dragons are the Premier Development League affiliate of the Earthquakes and include former Jesuit and UC Davis standout Matt Wiesenfarth and 2015 All-Big East Conference first-team goalkeeper J.T. Marcinkowski of Georgetown, a member of the U.S. U-20 men’s national pool.

The winner of the match will advance to the second round May 18 against the first-round winner between Irvine-based La Maquina FC and Portland Timbers U-23s.

The U.S. Open is the oldest ongoing competition in U.S. soccer and includes American MLS, North American Soccer League and USL sides.

Republic FC will host a second-round match May 18 against the winner of Wednesday’s first-round match between CD Aquiluchos USA of Oakland at San Francisco City FC.
