Teens might enjoy ‘Free State’ history lesson
Current films are reviewed each week to provide parents a guide to decide what may be appropriate to younger viewers
Free State Of Jones
Rated PG-13 for bloody images, intense sequences of peril and brief strong language.
What it’s about: The real life story of Confederate deserter and true Civil War rebel Newton Knight, who fought for racial and economic equality.
The kid attractor factor: Perhaps the star factor of Matthew McConaughey; interesting for teens with an interest in Civil War history.
Good lessons/bad lessons: All men are equal, and all men should be able to reap what they sow.
Violence: The Civil War battle scenes and rebellion uprisings are quite intense, violent and gory. Truly shows the reality of this type of event. A lot of shooting and killing from men, women and children.
Language: Aside from racial slurs, no strong language.
Sexuality: A scene of a character giving birth, but no graphic nudity or sexuality, just a detailed discussion of parentage and what that obviously implies.
Drugs: Whiskey
Parents advisory: While the bloody images and graphic violence are intense, the film offers up an interesting history lesson and would be OK for mature teens who might be interested in the subject.
