Woodland-based Nugget Market Inc. once again made Fortune magazine’s list of the nation’s “100 Best Companies to Work For,” moving up from 26th last year to No. 13 this year.
It marked the 11th consecutive year that Nugget made Fortune’s top 100.
“Creating a happy workplace is key to providing our communities with an extraordinary grocery experience,” Eric Stille, Nugget president and CEO, said in a statement. “Our associates bring positive energy and enthusiasm to work, and our leaders work hard to provide an environment where all associates are respected, appreciated and valued every day.”
On Fortune's list, Mountain View-based Google was No. 1 for the seventh time in 10 years.
Never miss a local story.
San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, which will run the hotel to be built near the new Sacramento Kings arena at Golden 1 Center, ranked No. 20 on the Fortune list. California led all states with 20 firms on the list.
In its 2016 listings released Thursday, Fortune said Nugget has “a culture built on a positive, fun-loving team atmosphere … (offering) industry-leading wages and health care benefits, including 100 percent company-paid premiums. To qualify, employees are only required to work 22 hours a week.”
Fortune also noted that the grocery company has taken employees on snowmobile and whitewater rafting trips, and hosted companywide celebrations. The magazine said Nugget “has never had a single layoff” in its 90-year history.
Family-owned Nugget, founded in 1926 by the father-son team of William and Mack Stille, operates 15 stores in Sacramento, Yolo, El Dorado, Placer, Solano and Marin counties. It oversees nine Nugget Markets in the Sacramento Valley, three Nugget Markets in Marin County, one Fork Lift by Nugget Markets and two Food 4 Less stores.
Nugget’s store count will grow by month’s end. Last week, Nugget announced it is acquiring two family-owned and operated grocery stores in Sonoma County: Sonoma Market at 500 W. Napa St., in Sonoma, and Glen Ellen Village Market at 13751 Arnold Drive, in Glen Ellen. The acquisition is expected to be finalized by March 31.
