Caltrans officials are warning drivers to expect traffic slowdowns and perhaps extended backups on Highway 50 in Sacramento and West Sacramento this weekend due to construction-related lane closures.
Lanes also will be closed at night this weekend and early next week on Interstate 5 south of Sacramento to allow for removal of an old overpass.
Crews, which closed several lanes in both directions on Highway 50 Friday night, may have only two lanes open at many points during the weekend. The full freeway should be reopened by 5 a.m. Monday, said Dennis Keaton, state Department of Transportation spokesman.
The closure area runs from 15th Street in Sacramento to Jefferson Boulevard in West Sacramento. Keaton suggested drivers stay away if they do not have to use that section of freeway this weekend.
Never miss a local story.
The closures will include some ramps. Notably, the ramp that runs from westbound Highway 50 to northbound Interstate 5 will be closed from 9 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday. Also, the 15th Street onramp to westbound 50 will be closed from 10:30 p.m. Saturday to 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
The closures are being put in place to allow crews to do resurfacing work on the freeway deck. The $26 million “Sac Decked Out” project, which has been underway for months, is designed to improve bridge deck durability and smoothness on the Pioneer Bridge and the freeway sections leading up to it.
The Sac Decked Out project is being handled by Myers & Sons Construction, the company that conducted the Fix50 work to the east of this project site earlier this year.
Caltrans also is alerting motorists that Interstate 5 will be reduced to one lane in each direction just south of Pocket Road. The reduction began Friday night, and will be in effect three other nights to allow for demolition of an old overpass near the town of Freeport.
Traffic restrictions will be in place south of Florin Road in Sacramento for southbound traffic and south of Laguna Boulevard for northbound traffic. The speed limit will be temporarily reduced to 50 mph in the work zone.
Here is the I-5 closure schedule:
Saturday : Through 9 a.m., then 8 p.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday
Monday: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday
Tuesday: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday
