Driver killed in head-on crash on Highway 50 near Kyburz

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a head-on crash on Highway 50 near Kyburz that killed a 78-year-old Milpitas man and injured a 73-year-old man from Grass Valley.

The vehicles collided at about 2:25 p.m. Thursday on a two-lane stretch of the highway separated by a double-yellow line about 7 miles east of Ice House Road, CHP spokesman Quinn Cuthbertson said.

The crash killed David Calderon, who was driving a Chevy Lumina eastbound on Highway 50 when his car was struck by a westbound Toyota Tacoma pickup that crossed the yellow lines, Cuthbertson said. The pickup driver, Gary Fitzgerald, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, the CHP spokesman said.
