89-year-old man arrested in wife’s death

An 89-year-old Sacramento man was arrested Friday night on a murder charge in connection with the death of his 83-year-old wife, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said.

Masaharu Ono was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on a single count of murder after sheriff’s deputies were called to the couple’s apartment in the 8600 block of Florin Road.

Deputies were called after Ono reported finding his wife dead inside the home and, after an investigation, “it was determined the victim had injuries which contributed to her death that were suspicious in nature,” the Sheriff’s Department said. Investigators determined that Ono “was ultimately responsible for the murder,” the department said.

The Sacramento coroner’s office identified the victim as Hiroko Ono.

Masaharu Ono is scheduled to make his first court appearance in the case on Tuesday.
