A Sacramento man authorities said was known by the name of “Dr. Death” was arrested Friday on gun-making charges by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives agents.

Last week a federal grand jury indicted Daniel Crowninshield, 45, of Sacramento, charging him with unlawfully making firearms, posssessing machine guns and other charges. According to court documents, Crowninshield was known by the online moniker “Dr. Death.”

He operated an unlicensed firearms-making business out of C&G Tool, a metal shop in north Sacramento, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney.

Using computer-controlled machines, Crowninshield allegedly made lower receivers for AR-15s and other firearms. A lower receiver holds mechanical parts such as the hammer, bolt and firing mechanism that combine with a trigger, firing pin and other parts to make up a firearm.

The lower receiver is made from a metal casting called a “blank.”

"The production and sale of assault rifles without serial numbers, background checks or waiting periods poses a serious danger to public safety," said U.S. Attorney Wagner.
