Sacramento police say man is serial bait bike thief

A man was arrested for the third time Saturday on suspicion of stealing a bait bike, according to Sacramento police.

John Kirkman, 35, was quickly spotted with the bike when officers responded to the area of 15th and P streets about 6:15 p.m. Saturday, according to police. Police say Kirkman has been caught stealing three bait bikes.

Sacramento County jail records indicate that a man with that name was released from custody Sunday. The online record does not list the offense for which he had been arrested.

The bait bike program involves placing bikes in random spots at different times in midtown and locking them up, then waiting for their built-in GPS systems to alert officers that one has been taken.
