Man dead, I-80 partially closed due to big rig crash near Nevada state line

Roadway fatality

A 45-year-old man died after a big rig crash early Sunday near the Nevada state line, authorities said.

The man was driving a 2020 International along westbound Interstate 80 at 1:20 a.m. at an unknown speed when he drifted onto the right shoulder, crashed into a guardrail and descended into a dirt embankment, causing the cab to overturn on its roof, according to a California Highway Patrol news release. The trailer of the big rig was partially suspended above the embankment while obstructing the rightmost lane of I-80.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor, officials said.

Westbound Interstate 80 at the Nevada state line remains closed near Hirschdale Road for a recovery operation as of 11:30 a.m., according to CHP Truckee.

The collision happened in California about four miles west of the state line. Conditions were rainy and cold, but no chain control was set in the area at the time.
