A Sutter Creek man and his son, en route to Amador County for Christmas, have been identified as the men who died in the Wednesday afternoon crash of a small plane near Sutter Creek.
Amador County Undersheriff James Wegner said Phillip Faillers was returning from Santa Clara County, where he had picked up his 27-year-old son, Alex Faillers. He said the plane apparently crashed in the fog.
Wegner said a 911 call was received about 12:36 p.m. reporting that a plane had crashed northeast of Sutter Crest Estates. Deputies and fire crews responded and found a single-engine plane. The two men were found dead at the scene.
FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said preliminary information indicated the plane was a Cessna 172 and that it went down in the 12000 block of Shake Ridge Road.
Never miss a local story.
Wegner said the crash occurred not far from from an airport, Westover Field.
