Driver shot at North Natomas truck stop

A truck driver was shot early Saturday morning at a North Natomas truck stop in what police described as a possible marijuana deal gone wrong.

The shooting took place around 2:15 a.m. at the Sacramento 49er Travel Plaza, a large truck stop just north of Interstate 80 outside the city limits on El Centro Road.

Two men wearing masks and armed with handguns approached the driver in his truck and shot him in the upper torso, according to Sgt. Tony Turnbull of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

The suspects fled on foot and remain at large.

The victim was traveling with another truck driver, who was inside the center at the time of the shooting, Turnbull said.

Eric Bakke, a supervisor at 49er Travel Plaza, said incidents like this are rare at the truck stop.

“I don’t think it’s happened here ever,” Bakke said.
