Delta tunnels plan draws protest
Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla, executive director of Restore the Delta, addressed reporters Friday on the steps of the state Capitol, speaking in opposition to a plan pushed by Gov. Jerry Brown to build a pair of massive tunnels in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Friday marked the deadline to submit comments on the project’s environmental impact documents.
The project is supported, in principle, by farms and cities in Southern California, which see it as a potentially more reliable source of surface water. Opponents, including some environmental and fishing groups and Delta farmers, lambast the plan as an unabashed Southern California “water grab.”
