The Sacramento Bee’s Capitol Bureau welcomes reporter Adam Ashton, who will cover state workers and lead the popular State Worker blog. Ashton joined The Bee in July after reporting for three of its sister newspapers in the McClatchy Company over the previous 12 years.
Ashton most recently covered the military for The News Tribune of Tacoma, Washington. His assignment centered on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the Army and Air Force base that is one of the largest employers in Washington State. He has hiked a 12,000-foot peak with a Special Operations team, been doused in tear gas by Army trainers and consumed enough Meals, Ready to Eat to know he wants to avoid them at all costs.
He also has embedded with troops in Afghanistan, covered humanitarian crises in Iraq and dug into America’s complicated relationship with the Japanese island that hosts one of the Marines’ largest bases. His coverage of war crimes committed by soldiers in Afghanistan was recognized by Military Reporters and Editors, the Society of Professional Journalists Northwest chapter and Investigative Reporters and Editors.
Ashton grew up in Livermore and is happy to be home in sunny California after a six-year run under the gray skies of Western Washington. He’s looking forward to learning more about California’s public servants and trying to make sense of state government for Bee readers.
