A two-alarm fire in a retail building northeast of downtown Sacramento heavily damaged the structure and destroyed merchandise inside.
The fire sent large plumes of smoke into the morning sky Thursday as the single-story store in a strip mall at Marysville and Arcade boulevards burned. The fire was reported about 7:15 a.m., sending Sacramento Fire Department crews to the scene.
Ladder trucks equipped with fire hoses dumped water directly on top of the burning building in the Hagginwood neighborhood. Loud explosions coming from the fire scene turned out to be oven cleaner aerosol cans exploding under intense heat.
The merchandise-filled store where the fire was centered has a “99 Cent” sign on its facade. The strip mall comprises six units.
Firefighters were assessing how much damage occurred in the other businesses. The fire was controlled by 8:30 a.m.
No injuries were reported. Cause of the fire was not known.
