Crews respond to two-alarm fire on American River Parkway
A two-alarm fire that started shortly before 4 p.m. Friday on the American River Parkway was reported under control but not fully contained as of 7 p.m.
Chris Harvey, a Sacramento Fire Department spokesman, said crews continued to tackle a number of spot fires downwind from the main fire area.
The fire burned in heavy brush south of the bikeway and north of the American River, behind the Costco store in the Woodlake area. It produced heavy smoke in the area of Business 80 and Highway 160.
Friday’s fire occurred near the site of a recent blaze.
Harvey said high wind, high temperatures and low humidity contributed to the fire’s spread. No estimate of the acreage burned was available Friday evening, and the cause was under investigation.
Sacramento firefighters were assisted by Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews, as well as bulldozers and a helicopter. Harvey estimated 50 to 70 firefighters were involved. He said they would remain on scene for several hours.
