Hoist the Causeway Cup: UC Davis tops Sacramento State in 2016-17
The rivalry always matters.
In winning 12 consecutive head-to-head athletic meetings against rival Sacramento State this academic year, UC Davis won the Causeway Cup for the fifth year in a row.
The Causeway Cup is an all-sports, head-to-head competition between the regional rivals, with the Aggies beating the Hornets in this year’s competitions by a combined score of 62 1/2-12 1/2.
That’s the largest margin of victory in the 13-year history of the competition, bettering the 37 1/2-point total by UC Davis during the 2013-14 academic year.
The schools compete in 17 common sports. UCD has won the Causeway Cup nine times to Sac State’s four.
Among the Aggies’ highest-profile Causeway Cup victories, a 48-30 football victory on Nov. 19 and the men’s basketball team won 81-72 at Golden 1 Center on Nov. 21.
UC Davis won the Big West Conference Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies defeated North Carolina Central 67-63 in a First Four play-in game before losing to top-seed Kansas 100-62 in the first round.
