The South Bay is getting a bigger-than-expected slice of Super Bowl 50. The two teams will both practice and lodge in the area in the run up to the Feb. 7 game, the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee confirmed on Sunday.
One of the teams will practice at San Jose State and stay at the Marriott hotel in downtown San Jose less than two miles away. The other will practice at Stanford University and stay at the Marriott in Santa Clara, which is 13 miles away. The game, of course, will be played at the 49ers’ home stadium in Santa Clara. All of those locations are in Santa Clara County. The San Jose Mercury News first reported the practice locations.
Super Bowl 50 is being billed as a regional experience with events happening as far away as Napa and Sonoma counties. The bulk of the week-before festivities, however, will take place in San Francisco where most of the hotel space is located and where there will be a fan village.
The NFL and host committee looked at practice facilities closer to San Francisco -- including the Raiders facility in Oakland -- before settling on the South Bay sites. The host committee has not yet announced the site of the annual media day event, although both Oracle Arena in Oakland and SAP Center in San Jose are being considered.
Also undecided: where the crush of media that will handle the event will stay. The NFL handed out 5,500 media credentials for the most recent Super Bowl in Arizona.
