49ers waive promising kicker Corey Acosta
SANTA CLARA -- Rookie kicker Corey Acosta, who made all four of his field-goal attempts in the preseason, was cut today by the 49ers, he announced on his Twitter account.
"Well it was a fun ride and amazing experience, but my time with the 49ers has come to an end. Looking forward to wherever may be next," he wrote.
Acosta, 24, went undrafted out of Southern Mississippi where last year he went 19-25 on field-goal tries, including 2-3 from 50 yards or more. He hit a 50-yard attempt Saturday in Denver.
The 49ers' top kicker is Phil Dawson. He's 40 years old and in the final year of his contract. That is, Acosta could be in the mix for a spot next season.
The 49ers must waive 14 players by 1 p.m. Tuesday. They are expected to make those cuts today. All teams must pare their rosters to 53 players by 1 p.m Saturday.
