49ers pre-game: Vernon Davis won’t play, Shareece Wright inactive again
SANTA CLARA -- Tight end Vernon Davis will not be in uniform for today’s game after missing practice last week with a knee injury. The 49ers, however, will have a boost of speed on offense as both running back Reggie Bush and receiver Bruce Ellington are active for the game.
Davis said he hurt his knee on a blocking play last week against the Cardinals and was listed as doubtful on the weekly injury report. He warmed up with teammates during the run-up to today’s game but did not take part in any practices. The tight end-heavy 49ers will go with Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek and Blake Bell in Davis’ absence.
Meanwhile, cornerback Shareece Wright, who complained about his lack of playing time and who has asked for a trade, is inactive for the fourth straight week. Tramaine Brock and Kenneth Acker will start at cornerback; Jimmie Ward is expected to see a lot of snaps against the Packers’ multiple-wide receiver formations.
As in Week 1, a pair of rookies -- Mike Davis and DeAndrew White -- are inactive. That means Bush and Jarryd Hayne will back up starter Carlos Hyde at tailback. Hayne is expected to return punts, Ellington likely will handle kick returns.
The Packers, meanwhile, are missing receiver Davante Adams, safety Morgan Burnett and tackle Bryan Bulaga. They will be replaced in the starting lineup by James Jones, Micah Hyde and Don Barclay respectively.
