How to help Elk Grove choose a homeless shelter location from 3 proposed sites
Elk Grove will host community meetings to distribute information and gather public feedback on its proposed new homeless shelter locations.
The meetings will be held at District56, located at 9701 Big Horn Blvd. at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday and Tuesday, Jan. 27. All four meetings will contain the same information, city officials said.
The three proposed locations for the city’s permanent homeless shelter are on Dwight Road north of Laguna Blvd., 9296 E. Stockton Blvd. and the corner of Survey Road and E. Stockton Blvd.
The lease for the city’s temporary shelter location, located at 9499 E. Stockton Blvd. in a Cavalry Christian Center building, is set to expire in September 2028. It can house up to 30 people consistently, for up to 180 days, plus five emergency short-term beds, and has served 95 people since its opening in November 2024. Families experiencing homelessness are provided with a voucher to stay at a motel through a partnership with nonprofit Elk Grove Homeless Assistance Resource Team.
The new shelter will be able to house up to 20 people, plus five emergency beds and a space for up to four families. Families will be housed separately from individuals, with separate entrances and common areas.
The shelter will be open only to Elk Grove residents or those with deep ties to the city who have referrals from the city’s homeless services navigators or police officers.
“While the 2024 Point-in-Time Count found 83 people experiencing homelessness within city borders, staff estimates there to be closer to 125 on any given night based on data from the City’s homeless navigation team, Elk Grove Police Department, and several nonprofit service providers,” the city’s website reads, claiming one of the lowest rates of homelessness in Sacramento County.
The City Council will consider the three site locations at its Feb. 11 meeting.
