Elk Grove’s first hospital was expected to open in 2026. But representatives for the nonprofit that is building it said they don’t yet have a new opening date to share.

“Work continues internally to bring Elk Grove its first hospital, and while we don’t have a timeline to share, we hope to provide more details in the near future,” a spokesperson for Dignity Health said in a statement to The Sacramento Bee.

Dignity Health’s website on Tuesday still listed the opening date for the hospital as 2026. A spokesperson for Dignity Health told The Bee that same day that date is “not accurate” and the website is “outdated.” The webpage was no longer viewable hours after The Bee’s inquiry.

Another document attached on the company’s website listed the opening date as 2026 or 2027. A spokesperson for Dignity Health did not respond when asked if 2027 was still a possible opening time for the hospital.

The webpage that was taken down also listed that construction would take place from 2023 to 2025. The plot of land, located on Elk Grove Boulevard and Wymark Drive, is owned by Dignity Health and is designated for the hospital. As of Wednesday, the site had no signs of construction.

Phyllis Baltz, president of Dignity Health Methodist Hospital of Sacramento, said in a 2023 statement to The Bee that the timeline of the project was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Similar to health systems across the country, we are in the process of reviewing and reprioritizing all of our major capital projects,” Baltz said in 2023.

An update on what will happen to Methodist Hospital in south Sacramento is also still to come, the spokesperson said. Dignity Health previously wrote in an online document that the location would require “significant and costly renovations” to meet California’s 2030 earthquake safety requirements, and while it would continue to own the property, it has not been decided how the building would be used. The medical team was planned to be transferred to the new hospital.

Dignity Health operates six hospitals in the Sacramento area: Mercy General Hospital, Mercy Hospital of Folsom, Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Methodist Hospital of Sacramento and Woodland Memorial Hospital.

Dignity Health purchased the land for Elk Grove’s first hospital in 2007, and the Elk Grove City Council approved the project in 2013. Dignity Health unveiled its plans for the hospital in December 2019, months before the COVID-19 pandemic. Dignity Health also merged with Colorado’s Catholic Health Initiatives to form CommonSpirit Health in 2019.

The hospital would be the first in Elk Grove, a city of over 180,000 people. The nearest hospitals are Kaiser Permanente’s south Sacramento location and Dignity Health’s Methodist Hospital, both located north of Calvine Road and minutes outside of city limits. However, for Elk Grove residents living farther south, east or west, that drive could take up to 25 minutes during high traffic times.

In 2023, Dignity Health said 12,000 people in the Elk Grove and the immediate surrounding areas were covered by the health system, and it served over 15,000 emergency visits and just over 4,000 hospital admissions from Elk Grove residents that year.

A Dignity Health medical plaza is already located at Elk Grove Boulevard and Wymark Drive, offering services for primary care, family medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, oncology, OB-GYN and more.

According to Dignity Health’s website, the hospital was planned to be 200,000 square feet with 100 beds in the first phase of development. Later phases were planned to add 230 beds, a rooftop helistop, a second medical office building and a 500-stall parking garage, according to the city of Elk Grove’s website.

The hospital was also planned to have an emergency department and ICU, operating rooms, women’s services, imaging, respiratory and physical therapy, and a pharmacy and laboratory.

City officials were unaware of an opening date and speculated about its opening over recent weeks.

Elk Grove “has not received any new information about local hospital projects,” Kristyn Nelson, public affairs and communications manager for Elk Grove, said.
