Inaugural Elk Grove mural festival kicks off. Here’s where art will be
Eight new murals are coming to a “living, breathing art gallery” on Elk Grove’s Historic Main Street as part of the city’s first ever mural festival.
The Paint the Grove Mural Festival, which takes place from June 1- 6, will feature artists painting murals on walls outside local businesses along Elk Grove Boulevard.
The festival is a partnership between the city, Elk Grove’s Arts and Creative Economy Commission and art studio Talking Walls, according to a news release from the city.
“Paint the Grove is a celebration of how Elk Grove continues to grow as a dynamic destination where public art, local businesses, and community connection come together,” the city’s news release said.
The eight mural locations span Elk Grove Boulevard between Elk Grove Florin Road and School Street and are painted by nationally and globally recognized artists, according to the release and the festival’s website.
The east wall of the Elk Grove Library’s current location at 8900 Elk Grove Blvd. will be painted by Ricky Watts. The library is relocating to a larger building this fall, one mile east to 9260 Elk Grove Blvd. The future of the old library building was yet been decided, city spokespeople said in April.
The east wall of restaurant Ocean Fish & Chips, located at 8944 Elk Grove Blvd., will be painted by Naomi Haverland. School of Rock, a music school at 9045 Elk Grove Blvd., will have its west wall will be painted by artist bublegum.
Two artists, ER and Mister Toledo, will paint the east wall of restaurant Happy Garden, located at 9081 Elk Grove Blvd.
The west walls of restaurant Prost Beer Hall, located at 9085 Elk Grove Blvd, will also be painted as well as the two-story section by Ryan “Pawn” Rhodes and Cameron Moberg and the one-story section by Franceska Gamez, according to the festival’s Instagram. Artist Alex Bacon was originally scheduled to paint part of Prost Beer Hall but pulled out because of a family emergency, according to the festival’s Instagram.
Rhodes and Moberg also painted the east wall of fireplace store Custom Fireside, located at 9097 Elk Grove Blvd.
Events throughout the week include a free walking mural tour Saturday at 9 a.m., featuring an insider look at the artists and their inspiration. Also at 4 p.m. Saturday, local artists will compete in a live art battle, featuring food trucks and vendors for the audience.
All events will take place at the Old Town Plaza, located at 9615 Railroad St.
