Construction on major Elk Grove roadway to finish this month. What it costs
Construction on a major roadway in Elk Grove is set to be completed this month after tree growth caused sections of the pavement to crack.
The section of Laguna Boulevard between Bruceville Road and Laguna Springs Drive is undergoing a “major roadway rehabilitation and median improvement project,” according to a news release from the city.
“The project was initiated when it was determined that root growth from the trees in the center medians were causing sections of pavement to lift and crack,” the city’s release said. “This damage presented ongoing maintenance challenges for city crews and growing impacts to drivers.”
With the help of an arborist, the city decided to remove and replace the trees in order to protect the roadway, according to the release.
The construction includes pavement repairs, reconstruction of the center medians, irrigation system upgrades and installation of new drought-tolerant landscaping and replacement trees, according to the release.
Lanes are closed each night in order for work to be completed but are re-opened in time for morning traffic, though drivers may encounter temporary lane adjustments or rough surfaces throughout the day.
The project includes similar work on Elk Grove Boulevard and Laguna Grove Drive and is funded through the city’s Measure E, a one-cent local sales tax approved by voters in 2022 to fund services the community identified as important, according to city spokesperson Kristyn Nelson.
The entire project costs an estimated $4.73 million, according to Nelson.
Work on Laguna Boulevard is expected to be completed by July 21, Nelson said.
