Folsom crews worked Monday to repair a large sinkhole that opened in the city’s Lexington Hills neighborhood during weekend storm that raked across the capital region.

The intersection of Prewett Drive and Newington Drive remained closed, with detours in place, as crews installed barriers and prepared for additional repairs as conditions allowed.

Photos supplied by the city showed the extent of the damage. Crews used ladders to descend into the deep hole. Inside, workers placed large plywood and metal supports to hold up the walls of dirt beneath the blacktop, while additional crews, trucks and heavy machinery operated on nearby streets.

City officials on Monday said they did not have an estimate for when repairs would be completed, citing high system flows from the weekend storms and the possibility of additional rain.

Nearly 2 inches of rain fell in Folsom in the 24-hour period ending at 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service, part of a spring storm that moved across Northern California last week.
